Solid-state chemistry of radionuclides

Among the tremendous amounts of species in the spent nuclear fuel (SNF), the large inventory of 238U and 235U as well as the highly toxic, radioactive, and long-lived transuranic radioisotopes (e.g. 237Np with T1/2 = 2.14 million years; 239Pu with T1/2 = 24000 years; 243Am with T1/2 = 7370 years; 245Cm with T1/2 = 8500 years etc.) are the main contributors for long-term radiotoxicity. In addition, their chemical behaviors are significantly complicated and unpredictable, making them extremely problematic to the public safety during nuclear waste management. Our group focuses on the investigation of the solid state chemistry/coordination chemistry of actinides, aiming at novel waste forms with superior chemical stability and radiation resistance. Furthermore, we also look deeply into the fundamental chemical- and physical- properties associated with 5f electron configurations by using the crystallography (mostly diffraction) and spectroscopic tools including UV-vis-NIR absorption/reflection, IR/Raman, photoluminescence, and synchrotron radiation based XANES and EXAFS.
