Ⅳ、Academic Part-time Roles & Student Guidance Outcomes

Dr. Reitzwas Principal Investigator, Co-Investigator and Project Manager in numerous spaceflight experiments investigating the radiation environment and its biological effects using US and Russian spacecraft, the International Space Station (ISS) and the Mars Science Laboratory .(MSL). All projects were performed successfully in collaboration with universities and organizations in US, Russia, Japan and Europe. His major achievements comprise the first assignment of the radiobiological effect to the passage of a single ion of the cosmic radiation, the first depth dose measurement in a human phantom torso inside and outside the ISS and the first-time radiation measurements on the Martian surface. My department was running the Helmholtz Space Life Sciences Research School (SpaceLife) in which in cooperation with 18 national and foreign universities more than 25 doctoral students were hired and guided for their doctoral degree.

With the set-up of the Workshop of Radiation Monitoring on the ISS (WRMISS) in 1996, for which dr. Reitz still acting as chairman, an international network in the field of radiation dosimetry in space was formed. Networking was further extended while Dr. Reitz was chairman COSPAR Commission F “Life Sciences as Related to Space” from 2010 to 2018.  Dr. Reitz. Was one of the founding members of the European Program for Investigations into Biological Effects of Space Radiation (IBER), which is complementary to the NASA space radiation health program run in Brookhaven and to other space radiobiology activities ongoing at accelerators in Russia and in Japan, and which supports safe human space exploration. Through his activities he had an important influence on the development of the radiation biology research in space in Europe and thereby contributing efficiently to the assessment of radiation protection in space and civil air flight.

Based on his background, expertise and skill he supports in designing the scientific program , ongoing activities and proposing new projects, with the aim to increase the competence of the institute and to enhancie the international cooperation, Another main task is to deliver courses for undergraduate and graduate students, optimizing lectures and lecture plan and facilitating discussions with students to deepen their knowledge and skill.
